Abstract
After introducing percutaneous nerve excitavility test (NET) using Hilger nerve stimulator about 30 years ago, the NET continues to be the most frequently used method for predicting prognosis of facial nerve paralysis because it is easy to use
and
inexpensive. Clinicians have generally accepted the 3.5mA difference between the sides in patients with facial paralysis as clinically significant. But this criterion is insensitive to indicate the degree of nerve degeneration.
The threshold of facial NET in 60 men and 60 women was established and the following result were obstained by statistical analysis. Now we propose the method of NET used in this study as a standard method.
1) The mean NET was 1.29*0.38mA in upper division and 1.41*0.45mA in lower division.
2) There was no difference in mean NET between men and women (p=0.09).
3) There was no statistically significant difference in the results between sides (p=0.32).
4) The threshold of NET was increased linearly with body mass index (p=0.001).
5) The threshold of NET was increased linearly with age (p=0.0004).
6) The threshold of NET was elevated by the use of electrode paste (p=0.0001). (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:6, 1995)
